What is Psychotherapy, anyway?

Psychotherapy is a talk-based form of counselling used to treat a wide variety of mental health problems and emotional difficulties. The goal is to relieve distress by discussing and expressing feelings and emotions, learning to change attitudes, behaviours, and habits that may be unhelpful, and to develop more constructive and adaptive ways of coping.

There are many different forms of psychotherapy including cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, solution-focused therapy, etc.

Counselling and psychotherapy is an extremely personal journey that can, at times, feel overwhelming and intimidating. We understand that you may have some questions that you would like answered before deciding how to proceed. Here are a few of our frequently asked questions to help get you started.

  • There's no definitive answer for this question. It depends on several factors: your motivation for change, your consistency in implementing what was discussed in session, the therapeutic relationship and your commitment to the process. When these factors have perfectly aligned, you can anticipate change.
